Frequently Asked Questions

Which way do solar panels face?

The orientation of solar panels is an important factor to optimize energy production from solar panels. The direction that solar panels face depends on the part of the hemisphere. In the northern hemisphere, the main rule is to face solar panels true south. Mostly it is the best direction as long as there are no shadings affected by physical objects such as buildings, constructions, or trees during the day. In the southern hemisphere, solar panels should face the north. The other important consideration is the appropriate tilt. Solar radiation should hit the surface of solar panels perpendicular to produce the most energy.

Why do we use solar panels?

Free and infinite energy

Solar energy is a renewable energy source which means that it is infinite compared to fossil fuels like propane, oil, coal, etc. The energy generated by the sun is enormous. The sun's surface is around 1.5 quadrillion acres. It only takes around 50 acres of the sun's surface to generate the equivalent of Earth's yearly energy consumption. A solar electric installation once set will generate free energy for many years and a return on the investment in 7 to 8 years.

How much energy gets to the Earth's surface?

Energy from the sun is transferred to the Earth's surface via radiation and just before it gets to us it is diffused in the atmosphere. Depending on the location, the power we can get at noon is around 320 kBTU/hr/sqft (or 1000 W/m2).

Solar panel efficiency

Unfortunately, we are not able to use solar power as a whole. We are limited with solar panel efficiency. Most of the PV modules used have a maximum efficiency of around 20%, which means usable power at noon is around 64 kBTU/hr/sqft (or 200W/m2). That is why standard 60 cell solar modules are around 300 W - 340 W.

What size system do I need for my house?

Solar electric system size is measured in kWp (kilowatt in peak) because their energy output is not the same throughout the year. To estimate your system size you can divide your yearly utility bill by kWh/kWp coefficient.

Values of kWh/kWp coefficient vary based on the location. If you want to find out what is the value for your area check Global Solar Atlas map. Open the map and legend at the bottom right corner to estimate kWh/kWp coefficient value for your house. To achieve maximum performance of your system sign up with us and we will match you with the right professional installer company.

An Example:

For NY State we estimated 1,300 kWh/kWp and annual bill of 5,000 kWh. Your estimated system size will be 5,000 kWh / 1,300 kWh/kWp =  3.85 kWp.

Why Energy Rates are Rising and What Can You Do About It!

Every year we see our electric rates continue to rise. New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) stated electric delivery rates will increase by 23.7% as early as May 2020. Articles of similar nature are being published in cities all over the country. We all see electric rates increasing in Florida, as legislation is being passed to make the electric grid more hurricane resilientThe increasing energy costs lead to homeowners all over the country asking the same two questions:

  1. Why is my electric bill rising?
  2. How can I save money on electricity?

Why is my electric bill rising?

There are several factors that affect electric rates. The largest cost of electric companies face is generating electricity. The maintenance and operations costs for operating a power plant continues to increase, and with that electric rates go up as well.  The price of fuel is one of the driving forces that lead to increased costs to generate electricity. During periods of high demand for fuel electric rates go up due to the increased prices the electric companies have to pay to produce energy.

We also see increased electric rates when the demand for electricity goes up. The demand for electricity goes up in the summer when people are running their air conditioners, and in the winter when people put up their holiday lights. This leads to higher electric bills for consumers and more money for electric companies.

Weather conditions also play a huge role in the cost of electricity. Major storms can cause damage to powerlines and transformers. The cost of fixing these damages lead to higher costs for the consumer. Finally, regulations can affect the consumer's electric bill. Some states regulate electric rates so they are consistent statewide, while others allow customers to choose an electricity providerStates such as California, Delaware, and New York are some examples of states that are deregulated. Both regulated, and deregulated states face increased electric rates year after year. As there is no end in sight for these rising electric rates, consumers are looking for ways to save money on electricity.

How can I save money on electricity?

Saving money on electricity in 2020 may seem like an impossible task. Alternative energy may seem out of reach for many families financially.  In reality, these are myths! It is a fact that solar energy can save consumers money long term.

New York, along with several other states have passed legislation to incentivize alternative energy. For example, iNew York City, the green new deal has been passed to help make New York City carbon neutral by 2050. Another example of this is California passing a law that requires solar to be put on all new construction homes starting in 2020. Laws like this increase the amount of clean energy being put into the grid. Thus, lowering electric rates due to decreased cost for electric companies. Solar is one of the most easily accessible alternative energy sources for consumers. Laws implementing clean energy, and tax credits decrease the barriers to entry for solar. California has incentive programs to decrease barriers for low-income families to go solar. You can also check out our solar learning center cost-benefit page to learn more about tax credits.

Another solution is energy management. There are several simple steps you can take to reduce your energy consumption, including replacing incandescent light bulbs for LED alternatives.

Why my smart appliances are not working?

A very important step in setting up a smart appliance at home is its initial configuration. This usually requires the user to connect the device to a local Wi-Fi network. An important thing to notice here is that most Wi-Fi routers operate on two different frequency bands being 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The majority of smart appliances available on the market use 2.4GHz. Therefore, it is good to connect all of them to an access point operating on this frequency band.

Furthermore, to successfully operate with smart devices, a smartphone needs to be connected to the same kind of hotspot (2.4GHz band). If your device is unable to properly connect to the router, then the problem may be because of the strength of the Wi-Fi signal around the house. If your home has areas where your smartphone or laptop is unable to establish a wireless Internet connection, your smart appliances will most likely have the same problem. It is important to consider placing your Wi-Fi router in the central location of where you install the smart devices. If this solution still does not provide a reliable connection, you might need to consider adding a range extender, signal repeater, or simply another router to your Wi-Fi network.

The configuration of some smart appliances may also require a Bluetooth connection in the process of their installation. In this case, you need to strictly follow the guidelines in the device's manual so that you do not mix up the two types of wireless communication standards (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi). Another thing to bear in mind is that the Bluetooth's range is very limited compared to the Wi-Fi, so it is crucial to stay close to the device while using this kind of connection when it is being configured.

Overall, hardware failures are not a frequent cause of Smart Home system malfunctions. Most Smart Home system potential issues originate from the improper configuration or low local Wi-Fi network quality. Furthermore, it is important to keep in mind that a lot of low power smart appliances run on a battery as a power supply. This may cause problems in the long run after the initial installation (i.e. in a couple of years).

Will I save energy if I sleep with the windows open?

Opinions differ when it comes to the question of whether I will save energy if I sleep with the windows open in the summer, or whether it is better to keep them closed at night and run the air conditioner.
It’s clear that the less the air conditioner runs, the more you save on energy costs. But in certain circumstances, the math doesn’t add up so easily. We’ve taken a closer look at the subject for you.

Sleep with open windows

When does it make sense to run the air conditioner overnight?

First of all, of course, it depends on the climatic circumstances. In places where it is hot and humid, the heat may not be noticeably reduced overnight. If that's the case, you're usually better off leaving the air conditioner running and maintaining a certain temperature. Of course, one has a great advantage if the house is reasonably insulated. This can save immense electricity costs.
In the case where it remains humid at night, it makes sense to keep the windows closed. On the one hand, so that it does not get too hot, but above all it should be avoided that the moisture gets into the house. Because this automatically makes it feel warmer and it makes the air conditioner have to work harder to keep the house cool.
The math is simple: you can save 20-30% on energy costs by turning off the air conditioner overnight. But in humid, very hot areas, it's harder for the air conditioner to cool the house back down during the day, resulting in an additional 20% consumption throughout the day, according to studies.

When does it make sense to turn off the air conditioner during nighttime?

When the nights are milder, or when temperatures drop below 70 degrees at night, sleeping with the windows open can have a positive impact on your energy bills. But it always comes back to the key word "insulation." For example, if the attic isn't well insulated and ventilated, it can create immensely high temperatures there that can't drop noticeably even overnight, and that heat in turn can affect the rest of the house, possibly causing temperatures in the house to rise significantly again when the air conditioner is turned off.
But this is also a problem that can be solved. For example, by sensibly installing ventilation in the attic. And, of course, through insulation.

When does it make sense to sleep with the windows open?

So, to sum up, depending on the outside temperature, sleeping with the windows open and the air conditioner off can mean significant savings in energy costs. But the conditions of outdoor temperature and the nature of the house should not be ignored. If temperatures don't consistently stay in the 80s, turning off the air conditioner and opening the windows overnight is usually the more cost-effective way to sleep comfortably.
You can also program your thermostat to turn off the air conditioner around midnight, when it's cooler outside, and turn it back on early in the morning.

Alternatively, you can use a fan at night (make sure you use a newer, more energy-efficient model, or the energy savings will be less). If you don't have a ceiling fan, but one that you can position flexibly, it makes sense to place it in such a way that it distributes the cool air from outside into the room.

Will Solar Increase the Resale Value of My Home if I Have to Move?

If you have to relocate due to job or family circumstances, don’t worry. Your solar panels will increase the resale value of your house and prepare you to install a system on your new home!

solar increases home value

What if you heard that solar panels could increase the resale price of your home? In our solar learning center, we mention that going solar can save you money. We briefly explained in this FAQ that the addition of a solar energy system to your house can increase the resale value of the home by an average of $15,000. In the past, we only briefly touched on is why solar is desirable to potential buyers.

Solar on the roof attracts buyers

The past decade saw a change in the psychographics of buyers. In recent years, wildfires in Australia and the Amazon Rainforest, droughts in California, unsafe drinking water in Flint, MI, el niños, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and population extinction all occurred. Now, more than ever, people are concerned about the planet. A 2018 survey conducted by Pew Research Center found that climate change was cited as a top threat in half of the countries surveyed. Solar panels are one way that home-buyers can feel like they are doing their part to save the Earth.

Demographics have evolved along with the psychographics. The Pew Research Center also cited that women and the younger generations are more concerned about climate change than their counterparts. Per recent studies, these groups are also buying houses in greater numbers. In the past couple of decades, the number of single women purchasing a home has risen. It is predicted that studies in 2020 will find the Millennial generation taking out half of all mortgages. This means the home-buyer purchasing power is increasingly in the hands of those who are conscious of the importance of green lifestyles.

Uncertain reduction

Solar is an increasingly attractive option to traditional forms of home energy because of the unpredictability of energy prices. In a capitalistic economy, prices depend on supply and demand. There are experts within the energy field whose job it is to predict the future supply and demand for companies. Recently, they have been getting the predictions wrong. This means that prices will be more unsteady and businesses will be more conservative in their ventures. If informed, potential buyers may find solar panels interesting because of the money it can save them in the long run.
